James Sullivan

James decided it was time to update this little tag line and call himself the EIC of GameAspect.Com and also the operator. He’s primarily a PC gamer but enjoys the occasional console game. RTS, Racing, FPS and RPG are his games of choice… but he’ll play just about any game.

On the issue of “Indie Games”, I think we can have a solid definition. I would say that any game developed independent of a publisher regardless wether they were partnered with a publisher before, is still an indie game. For instance if Arena Net dropped their partnership with NC Soft and put out a game with their own money then that would be considered an independent game. It doesn’t matter how popular the dev. is or has been in the past, so long as they produce a game with their own funding then it by definition would be an indie game. That is just my stance on the isse.heh

I think a lot of people want to pigeon hole indie games as a genre. For instance I think most people want to associate 8-bit graphics or voxel/pixel games with indie games. While 9/10 times this is the case, that is not always true.

Lets say Bioware made an open world 8-bit voxel style game and it was published by EA. That would by definition be a Mainstream title, but people would just say “Hey that looks a lot like an indie game.”

The truth is there are some AAA looking indie games out there. I think E.Y.E was an indie game, and same for Blacklight Tango Down I believe (not 100% though).Or look at Red 5’s “Firefall”. That would be considered a AAA TPS/FPSMMORPG but they are releasing the game themselves and so they are an indie dev. by definition in my eyes anyway.

I think maybe we need to start looking at things as if it is the record industry. There are indie labels there, so you can kind of compare that to indie devs/publishers. The devs could be the band but they might have a small publisher backing them and I guess then that could be considered indie. Hmm so yeah it does get a bit wishy washy I suppose.

    Anywho, those are my thoughts………

Yeah that was my point. The more you try to analyze what an indie game is, the more the definition gets clouded.

I found this podcast by accident. I don’t see an RSS or iTunes feed link. I see dozens of links to news sources, plus all of the usual facebook/digg/whatzits links, but none that let me subscribe to the podcast.1Up and Gamespot managed to figure out RSS 7 years ago. Please catch up.

    Fail.

Oh,,this is not a podcast feed.
